The Barkatullah University (BU) was named in 1988 after the great freedom fighter Professor Barkatullah was born. Formerly the university was named as Bhopal University. The university was established in 1970. It is a public university that offers various non-technical programs to the students. There are numerous colleges in the state of Madhya Pradesh which are affiliated to the Barkatullah University. It is the main university of the Bhopal city.
